Although faxing is less common that it used to be, it's still a standard communication method for many businesses. Although Apple has eliminated built-in fax modems from its Macs, your company can still fax from these computers by taking advantage of external USB fax modems manufacturered by companies such as Apple and USRobotics. External USB fax modems have a USB connection cable on one end and a phone jack on the other, enabling you to connect your Mac via USB to any standard phone jack.
1.Plug one end of the modem USB cable into the external USB fax modem and the other into an available USB port on your Mac. The Mac automatically installs the device.
2.Plug one end of the phone cord into the phone jack on the USB modem and the other into an active phone jack.

6.Click the 'Fax' tab. Select your external modem from the list of available devices and click 'Add.'
8.Click the 'Receive Options' button to configure your Mac to receive faxes as well as send them.
9.Click the 'Receive faxes on this computer' check box.
10.Select the number of rings your Mac should wait before answering the call.
11.Click the 'Save To' drop-down menu and select the location where incoming faxes will be saved on your computer. To automatically print faxes on a printer, click the 'Print To' check box and select your printer from the drop-down menu. To automatically email incoming faxes, click the 'Email To' check box and enter an email address in the provided field.
12.Click the 'OK' button to finish setting up your fax modem settings.
Tips
- Not all external USB modems are compatible with Mac computers. Verify the modem's compatibility prior to purchase.
- If you're having difficulties sending or receiving faxes, click the AirPort icon on your Mac's notifications bar and click 'Turn AirPort Off,' and try sending or receiving again.
